Description :
Antique 1895 Bronze San Francisco Post Office Box Door An exceptional piece of American postal history, this authentic antique bronze U.S. Post Office box door serves as both a beautiful decorative display and a captivating historic relic. Originally cast by the renowned Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company around 1895, this door—Box 495—features the highly collectible "Federal Eagle" design, officially carrying an 1892 utility patent and an 1895 design patent. This specific door boasts a remarkable provenance: according to its commemorative plaque, it was installed in the Main San Francisco Post Office in 1905, directly surviving the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. It remained in continuous service for nearly seven decades until its retirement in 1972. Custom-mounted onto a rich, naturally grained wooden plaque frame, the piece includes its original horizontal locking deadbolt mechanism and thick, bevel-edged viewing window glass. The reverse side features a personalized, engraved historical presentation to a federal employee commemorating service during the 1977–1978 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). In excellent antique condition with a beautifully aged bronze patina, this unique artifact is perfect for collectors of Americana, postal history, or West Coast memorabilia. Ready to hang with a picture wire and a carpet spacer already installed on back 9"T x 7.25"W Count: 1 item
