Description :
A pair of French Empire Period Gilt Bronze Chairs with cream silk damask upholstery. Empire Period Gilt Bronze Chairs are remarkable examples of early 19th-century French furniture design, originating during the Empire period (1804-1815), which was heavily influenced by the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. Furniture from this era is known for its classical inspiration, drawn from ancient Roman and Greek aesthetics, combined with a strong sense of imperial grandeur.
These chairs are characterized by their use of gilt bronze (ormolu) accents, which are finely crafted and gilded bronze elements applied to the frame as decorative features. The gilt bronze is often used to embellish key areas like the legs, arms, and backrest, featuring motifs typical of the Empire style such as laurel wreaths, eagles, lyres, and mythological figures like sphinxes and winged victories. These symbols were chosen for their association with power, victory, and imperial authority, reflecting Napoleon’s ambitions.
The frames of these chairs are typically constructed from mahogany or other rich woods, chosen for their durability and stately appearance. The chairs often have a rigid, symmetrical structure, with a focus on straight lines and solid, imposing forms. The backrests are high and straight. Legs are tapered with additional bronze mounts. seat height of 17 inches
